Before You Rent a Dumpster

Five things that will save you time, money, and a headache.

Choose the Right Size

When in doubt, go one size up. Overfilling a dumpster is a safety hazard and most companies won't haul an overloaded container. The cost difference between sizes is usually small compared to having to order a second dumpster.

Know What's Not Allowed

Hazardous materials — paint, solvents, batteries, tires, asbestos, and propane tanks — are prohibited in most dumpsters. Check the company's accepted materials list before ordering. Prohibited items can result in additional fees or refusal to haul.

Check If You Need a Permit

If the dumpster will sit on your private driveway, you generally don't need a permit. If it needs to go on a public street or sidewalk, your city or county may require one. Ask your rental company — many handle the permit process for you.

Understand Weight Limits

Every dumpster has a weight limit, usually measured in tons. Heavy materials like concrete, dirt, and roofing shingles add up fast. Exceeding the limit results in overage fees — often $50–$100 per additional ton. Ask about weight limits before loading heavy debris.

Confirm Your Rental Period

Most rentals include 7 days. After that, daily extension fees apply — typically $10–$20 per day. If your project might run long, ask about extension rates upfront. Some companies offer flat weekly rates that are more economical for longer projects.
